Singaporean woman creates presentation slides on why you should date her, gets inbox flooded

0

Frustrated by her lack of dates, 26-year-old Kelly Lim decided to put together a new dating profile — in the form of presentation slides.

The funeral undertaker is no stranger to being featured in the media, primarily due to her unusual trade for someone of her demographic.

She is also currently awaiting acceptance into medical school overseas, where she will major in mortuary science.

In an Instagram post yesterday (Nov 20), Kelly shared a six-slide presentation titled “Why you should swipe right”.

Tagging prominent dating apps such as Tinder, OKCupid, Bumble and Paktor, she wrote: “Presenting to you my new dating app profile put together in 15 mins on a sick Sunday afternoon spent in bed”.

The presentation consisted of Kelly’s background and achievements, as well as many other impressive qualities.

But what really stood out was her sense of humour in the slides e.g. “I create my own memes because my life is a joke.”

Well, it seems like Kelly’s presentation has certainly gotten the attention it deserves.

Earlier today, she reported having received 236 messages (and counting), screenshots of which she shared on Facebook.

Got a spare $96m? How about a single Hong Kong apartment?

0

Hong Kong – Home may be where the heart is, but in Hong Kong it comes at a record price – more than $71 million (S$96 million) for a single apartment.

A well-heeled buyer snapped up two adjacent mountain-top pads – each more than 4,000 square feet (370 square metres) – for an eye-watering combined price of US$149.1 million.

The smaller of the two properties closed at $71.7 million, making it Asia’s most expensive apartment by area, at a whopping $17,000 per square foot, according to Bloomberg News.

The price smashed the previous record paid for a place to sleep in Hong Kong’s red-hot property market when a duplex unit on the island topped out at $13,439 per square foot in September.

A month later an office building in downtown Hong Kong sold for a record $5 billion.

In June a single parking space changed hands for $664,200, part of a boom in commercial and residential property prices fuelled by an influx of money from wealthy mainland Chinese investors and developers.

The surging property market has become a political issue as costs in one of the world’s most expensive cities continue to soar, forcing some small businesses to close due to sky-high rents while many residents cannot afford to buy or rent decent homes.

An official study last week showed nearly 20 per cent of the city’s 7.35 million people live below the poverty line.

Song Joong Ki will host Mnet Asian Music Awards in Hong Kong

0

SEOUL – Actor Song Joong Ki will host this year’s Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) in Hong Kong, his first public appearance after his Internet-breaking wedding with actress Song Hye Kyo last month.

Previously a one-day event, the South Korean music awards ceremony has been expanded into three shows in three Asian cities. MAMA Week will kick off at Hoa Binh Theatre in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on Nov 25, then move to Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan on Nov 29, and finally to AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong on Dec 1.

Actor Park Bo Gum, who is managed by the same agency as Song, will host the show in Japan.

South Korean cable channel Mnet aims to put MAMA on a par with the Grammy Awards.

“Looking back at the past 10 years, many unexpected things happened,” said Mr Kim Ki Woong, head of the Mnet division, during a press conference on Monday.

“There is the success of Psy and there are many artists who are recognised overseas. Our music is becoming mainstream music. If Asian artists together make music that the world knows, that would make MAMA an awards ceremony that can coexist with the Grammys someday,” he said.

This year, MAMA will feature a star-studded lineup, including Seventeen and Wanna One for the show in Vietnam; EXO-CBX, Seventeen, Twice and Monsta X for Japan; and Super Junior, EXO, BTS, GOT7, Red Velvet and Wanna One for Hong Kong.

Celebrities such as Lee Young Ae, Nam Joo Hyuk, Song Ji Hyo and Ahn Jae Hyun will also appear at the shows as presenters.

MAMA started as a local music festival. The show has been held overseas since 2010 and become one of the biggest K-pop events.

The North Korean soldier who defected to the South last week regained consciousness Tuesday.

A second round of press briefing by Ajou University Hospital regarding the soldier’s condition will take place as early as late Tuesday.

The soldier reportedly asked to listen to a South Korean song upon waking up. He is not in a stable enough condition to talk with the media, as he had sustained gunshot wounds.

The North Korean soldier dashed across the border to defect on Nov 13.

He was a 20-something noncommissioned officer who had served at the Joint Security Area in the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone, according to South Korea’s spy agency.

Thailand seeks to prosecute ousted PM Thaksin in absentia in two graft cases

0

BANGKOK – Thailand is seeking to prosecute ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra for graft under a law that allows politicians to be tried in absentia, an official said on Tuesday, months after Thaksin’s sister was sentenced to jail in her absence.

Thailand is divided broadly between those backing Thaksin and his sister, former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, whose government was removed in a 2014 coup, and the elite in the capital, Bangkok.

A former commerce minister and member of Yingluck’s Puea Thai Party that was ousted in the coup said the planned prosecution of Thaksin was politically motivated.

The former telecommunications tycoon was ousted in a 2006 coup and has since lived in self-imposed exile to avoid a graft conviction in 2008 he says was politically motivated.

Separate cases against Thaksin, including graft cases in 2008 and 2012, had to be suspended until he returned to Thailand for trial.

But an amendment to the law in September makes it possible for politicians to be prosecuted in their absence.

The 2008 and 2012 cases involved Thaksin’s alleged conflict of interest in a telecoms concession and suspected abuse of power.

“Public prosecutors put in a request to the supreme court today to proceed with the two cases without presence of the accused, in accordance with the new law,” Wanchart Santikunchorn, a spokesman for the office of the attorney-general, told reporters.

Thaksin was not immediately available for comment.

Thaksin re-shaped Thai politics after building a business empire, winning staunch support with populist policies that raised living standards, especially among the rural poor, and propelled him or his loyalists to victory in every election since 2001.

Yingluck fled the country in August, ahead of a verdict in a negligence trial, but was eventually found guilty and handed down a five-year jail term in absentia in September.

Former commerce minister Watana Muangsook said the junta was damaging the country with politically motivated court cases.

“The law which allows court proceedings in absentia of the accused is aimed at destroying the regime’s political opposition,” Watana said in a statement to Reuters.

Wanchart denied the moves against the Shinawatra family were biased, saying they were in line with the newly amended law.

Japan woman claims to have dumped 4 babies in concrete buckets

0

TOKYO – A mother who dumped four of her babies in buckets filled with concrete that she then kept in her apartment for two decades was arrested in Japan on Tuesday (Nov 21).

Mayumi Saito, 53, told investigators she had given birth to the infants between 1992 and 1997, a police spokesman told AFP.

Saito handed herself in at an Osaka police station on Monday and confessed, saying she did not think her desperate financial predicament made it possible for her to look after the children, local media reported.

Detectives who searched her home found four concrete-filled buckets in a closet.

Scans indicate that each one contains what appears to be the remains of an infant, the Asahi Shimbun reported.

Police are still interviewing the woman, who lives with her son, and trying to determine whether she killed the babies or whether they were stillborn, the report said.

“I did not think I could afford to raise them. I had no one to talk to,” she told police, according to national broadcaster NHK.

It is unclear why she turned herself in now, local media said.

Saito came forward three weeks after police arrested Takahiro Shiraishi, 27, dubbed the “Twitter killer”, who has confessed to killing and dismembering nine people he met via social media.

Investigators found him in his apartment just outside Tokyo surrounded by the festering remains of his victims inside coolers and containers.

Thai man looks like a K-pop star after plastic surgery, even his mum can't recognise him

0

PETALING JAYA –  A factory worker in Thailand suffering from a crooked jaw underwent a series of plastic surgery procedures, so much so that his own mother could not recognise him.

But while his social life has also transformed, Noppajit Monlin remains faithful and committed to his transgender girlfriend of three years.

In the TV series called Let Me In Thailand, the Thai edition of a popular South Korean reality TV show, Noppajit Monlin wanted to change his appearance because his crooked jaw did not allow him to chew properly.

Photo: Video screengrab

Embarrassed by his appearance, the 22-year-old distanced himself from colleagues and always ate by himself during his lunch break, reported The Star’s Malay-language portal mStar.

In Season Three of the makeover programme that airs every Sunday, Noppajit was selected to undergo plastic surgery in South Korea. He fixed his jaw, forehead and eyelids.

His saliva glands were injected with botox to correct excessive salivation, and he also underwent treatment to get rid of his skin blemishes.

After the whole process was completed, Noppajit looked like a completely different person.

After a three-month recovery period, he was scheduled to meet his mother, who was not named in the TV show, for the first time since he began his makeover, at their favourite restaurant.

Unfortunately, his mother could not recognise Noppajit even though he was seated at another table facing hers.

“I really miss (him), this is not an act,” she said, crying in front of the cameras while talking about her son.

He stood up and walked towards his mother, and she started crying when he introduced himself as the “new Noppajit”.

“Mum, do you remember me? Look at me,” he said.

“Is that you? Is that really you?” his mother said.

She still could not believe it after being shown “before” and “after” photographs of Noppajit’s transformation, and had to look at scars on his hands to prove it to herself.

Noppajit told the TV show that his life has changed tremendously since the procedure.

“Many see me as a completely different individual. I feel better. Before this, people looked at my face as abnormal and society did not accept me.

“But now I have more friends,” he added.

But while he looks like a K-pop star now, Noppajit said he was still the same person and his heart belonged to Tob, a transgender woman whom he met via Facebook.

He said he has been in a relationship with Tob for three years now.

“I took care of him and I am not afraid that he will leave me. We have trusted one another from the beginning,” said the 26-year-old Tob.

Noppajit concurred. “She took care of me … this woman is the one for me.

“Although I have a new life now, my heart remains the same,” he added.

Singapore students are best team players: PISA study

0

SINGAPORE: Singapore students are the best in the world when it comes to working in teams to solve problems, according to the results of a global Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2015 study that was published on Tuesday (Nov 21).

Among the 52 countries that took part, Singapore had the highest proportion of top performers in the Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) portion of the triennial international benchmarking study.

The accolade follows Singapore’s best ever performance in PISA, when it was announced in December 2016 that the country was ranked top in all three categories – reading, mathematics and science.

The assessment for these categories, as well as CPS, was conducted in 2015 for 15-year-old students, and they were coordinated by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Director for education and skills and special advisor to the secretary-general at OECD Andreas Schleicher, was quoted as saying in an MOE press release on Tuesday that this was the first time collaborative problem solving has been assessed internationally.

CPS ranked the students’ ability to solve problems despite multiple constraints, ensure that team members follow through with their responsibilities, monitor the team’s progress, as well as to take the initiative to overcome obstacles and resolve conflicts.

The students were also scored on how they can balance the collaboration and problem-solving aspects of a task, identify efficient pathways to a solution and take action to solve the problem.

Singapore students tallied an average score of 561 for the CPS, which was markedly above the OECD average of 500. Tunisia recorded the lowest score at 382.

Asian countries made up four out of the top five countries for CPS, with Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea also notching high scores. Canada was the other nation to make the top five.

A total of 5,825 mainly Secondary 4 students from 168 public secondary schools, and 290 students from nine private schools were randomly selected to represent Singapore in 2015 for the PISA study.

Besides having the highest proportion of top performers, Singapore had one of the smallest proportions of low performers. These consisted of students who tend to focus more on their individual role within the group.

SINGAPORE STUDENTS ‘SUPERBLY EQUIPPED’ FOR FUTURE

Commenting on Singapore’s results, Mr Schleicher said: “What this assessment shows is that Singapore’s young people are superbly equipped for the challenges and opportunities of the future – students of high ability who work well both independently and together.”

Singapore’s Ministry of Education was also heartened by the results, as noted by MOE’s deputy director-general of education (curriculum) Sng Chern Wei in Tuesday’s release.

“Singapore has long recognised the need to equip our students with a suite of life skills and values that will prepare them well for future challenges … In line with this, our teachers will continue to encourage teamwork among students and create opportunities for students to collaborate both inside and outside the classroom,” he said.

SINGAPORE STUDENTS ENJOY SEEING THEIR CLASSMATES SUCCEED

The PISA CPS 2015 results also show that Singapore students are highly motivated to work in groups, and they know how to be effective collaborators, MOE said.

(Source: MOE)

“More than nine in 10 said that they are good listeners, enjoy seeing their classmates be successful, take into account what others are interested in, and enjoy considering different perspectives. More than eight in 10 believe that teams make better decisions than individuals, and teamwork raises their own efficiency,” the ministry added.

MOE said these positive attitudes are nurtured through its schools’ and teachers’ efforts in offering integrated learning experiences such as subject-based fieldwork, co-curricular activities, project work, and distinctive programmes like the Applied Learning Programme and Learning for Life Programme.

“Teachers also introduce communication-intensive activities during lessons, such as class debates and opportunities for students to explain their ideas,” MOE said.

The Ministry added that the results showed a close association between students’ daily communication with their parents and their CPS skills. Singapore students who converse with their parents after school scored 21 points higher in their CPS performance than those who do not, MOE highlighted.

Commenting on this point, Mr Sng said: “As parents are important partners in their children’s education journey, schools will continue to work with parents to support our children’s learning and growth holistically.”
