Hong Kong athlete Lui Lai Yiu says coach abused her as teen

0

HONG KONG – A top Hong Kong hurdler Thursday (Nov 30) accused her former coach of sexually assaulting her when she was a schoolgirl, the first high-profile woman in the socially conservative city to tell of abuse as part of the #MeToo movement.

The #MeToo campaign exposing sexual misconduct spread rapidly in October after multiple allegations against Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein and has since shaken artistic, media and political circles globally.

In an open letter posted on Facebook on her 23rd birthday, Lui Lai Yiu did not name the man who abused her, calling him “coach Y”.

She recalled how, as a young teenager, she had thought nothing of it when he offered her a massage at his home to relax her muscles.

After starting with her jeans on, he eventually removed them and her underwear and touched her private parts, she said.

“In my mind he was a coach I respected,” wrote Lui.

“I had never thought he would do despicable things to his students.”

Pui Ching Middle School, which Lui attended, said in a Facebook statement Thursday that after Lui told them three weeks ago of her intention to publicise the incident they had immediately stopped working with the accused coach.

Lui is a promising athlete who took the gold in the 60-metre women’s hurdles at the Asian Indoor Games in September.

She said she was inspired to speak out by American Olympic gold-winning gymnast McKayla Maroney, one of a number of women who accused former USA Gymnastic team doctor Lawrence Nassar of abusing them.

Nassar, 54, has pleaded guilty to multiple counts of criminal sexual conduct.

Lui shared Thursday’s post with a photo of her holding a sign that read “#METOO” with her initials “LLY” and her eyes cropped out of the shot.

Having only confided to a close friend for the first time two years ago about the incident, Lui said she wanted to speak up on her birthday as a gift to herself, as well as to raise awareness about child sex abuse and to encourage other victims.

“To speak the truth is a form of liberation, to turn myself from victim to survivor,” she wrote.

“It was not my fault, nor my parents’, nor my school’s. It was the perpetrator’s fault,” she said.

Messages of support followed her post, in which she called for the #MeToo movement to keep going.

Rights group and crisis centre The Association Concerning Sexual Violence Against Women urged the public to use the hashtag #MeTooHK this month in a bid to increase the movement’s resonance in the city, where incidents of sexual assault and harassment often provoke little outrage or response.

Lui said on Facebook that while she had not heard of other cases of sexual abuse in Hong Kong’s sporting world, she believed there must have been incidents, and encouraged survivors to seek help.

“In Chinese culture, sex-related topics have always been seen as embarrassing, shameful or not to be publicly discussed,” said Lui.

Biggest Supermoon of the year to light up Seoul sky this weekend

0

The biggest supermoon of this year is set to brighten up Seoul sky around midnight on Sunday, a state-run maritime research agency said Wednesday.

According to Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute, the best time to see the astronomical event is 0:47 a.m. on Monday, when the moon will appear at its largest for skygazers in Seoul. The supermoon phenomenon will be observed at different times across the earth.

The upcoming lunar show will mark the fourth occasion and the largest scale this year, following the past showings in April, May and June.

A supermoon is a full moon or a new moon that coincides with the closest distance that the Moon reaches to Earth in its orbit. The distance between the Moon and the Earth around midnight on Sunday will be at 357,623 kilometers.

Japanese anime fan calls police on girlfriend for stealing $1,000 worth of anime goods

0

A 23-year-old Japanese woman had recently been taken into custody after her boyfriend reported her to the police for stealing his anime collectibles.

The woman had been living with her 49-year-old boyfriend, Twitter user @wkkazuya. She had moved in with him after quitting her job and needed to vacate the company dormitory she had been living in.

It so happens that @wkkazuya owned a large collection of physical media for anime, such as limited edition Blu-ray and DVD boxes for certain series. He proudly displayed his collection on an easily accessible book case, reported SoraNews24.

Eventually, @wkkazuya started to notice gaps in his collection. Thinking there was no one else who had access, he contacted the police on Nov. 24.

His girlfriend initially denied the theft and blamed an acquaintance for the disappearances, said the report. She later admitted to steeling the items which amounted to about 90,000 yen (S$1,080).

The items were sold to a local branch of Geo, a store which buys used anime goods. She said she stole them because she didn’t have any money.

Later, @wkkazuya shared photos of his dented collection and of his experience through tweets.

“An Otaku who suffered from theft of his collection. Where are the collectibles that were brought out without permission and sold? Well, you will notice that empty gaps on the collection shelf …”

The items his girlfriend sold had been recovered by the police and have since been held as evidence. Unfortunately for @wkkazuya, the once pristine collectible limited edition boxes had been opened.

It has not been clarified whether it was the girlfriend, the store personnel or the police who opened the items. With that, the value of the items in the collectors’ market may have already suffered.

Jay-Z admits he was unfaithful to Beyonce

0

Much like every relationship, music royalty couple Jay-Z and Beyonce have certainly endured their fair share of trials and tribulations.

Although both stars had kept relatively mum about their personal lives through the years, fans have long speculated that some of these troubles include infidelity, at least on Jay-Z’s part.

Those rumours have finally been laid to rest, as the 47-year-old hip-hop icon confirmed he did indeed cheat on his wife at one point.

“You have to survive. So you go into survival mode, and when you go into survival mode, what happens? You shut down all emotions. So, even with women, you gonna shut down emotionally, so you can’t connect,” Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, shared in a brave tell-all with the New York Times.

“In my case, like, it’s deep. And then all the things happen from there – infidelity,” he admitted.

The adultery issues were subtly hinted at by both artists through their music, first in Beyonce’s “Lemonade” album last year, and again on Jay-Z’s “4:44” album in June.

Aside from countless hours spent by the couple in therapy sessions, the pair was also able to repair their relationship by doing what they do best together-creating wonderful music.

“We were using our art almost like a therapy session. And we started making music together,” Jay-Z said.

“And then the music she was making at that time was further along. So, her album came out as opposed to the joint album that we were working on.”

The “99 Problems” singer added: “We still have a lot of that music. And this is what it became. There was never a point where it was like, ‘I’m making this album.’ I was right there the entire time.”

After overcoming the odds and staying together, the pair currently devotes their time to 5-year-old daughter Blue Ivy Carter and to twins born last June.

Still, the Brooklyn-born business mogul continues to be grateful for a second chance.

“The best place in the hurricane is in the middle of it. The best place is right in the middle of the pain,” Jay-Z described the couple’s process of healing.

“And that’s where we were sitting. And i twas uncomfortable. And we had a lot of conversations. [I was] really proud of the music she made, and she was really proud of the art I released. And, you know, at the end of the day we really have a healthy respect for one another’s craft. I think she’s amazing.”

Stranded tourists depart Bali as airport reopens

0

KARANGASEM, Indonesia – Airlines laid on extra flights to Bali on Thursday to allow some of the thousands of passengers stranded by the eruption of Mount Agung to fly out, as a switch in wind direction sent volcanic ash away from the holiday island’s airport.

Agung was partially shrouded by cloud on Thursday with parts of Bali lashed by monsoon rain, but according to officials there were persistent tremors from the crater.

“Mount Agung continues to erupt, ejecting volcanic ash up to 2,000 metres (6,500 ft) in height,” Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency, said via Twitter. Earlier in the week, Agung had ejected showers of rocks up to four km (two miles), he said. The reopening on Wednesday afternoon of Bali’s airport, which is about 60 km (37 miles) away from Mount Agung, followed a downgrade in an aviation warning to one level below the most serious, with the arrival of more favourable winds.

While Bali’s airport was open again after a more than two-day closure, the airport on neighbouring Lombok island was closed on Thursday due to ash from Agung, air traffic control provider AirNav said.

Bali airport’s call centre said three flights had left on Thursday morning, while nine had arrived. It’s website showed dozens of flights scheduled to fly to Singapore, Seoul, Perth and other cities.

Two Chinese state-owned airlines on Wednesday night sent flights to fetch more than 2,700 Chinese tourists from Bali, Xinhua news agency said.

China Southern Airlines sent two planes from Guangzhou and Shenzhen, while China Eastern Airlines flew in four from Beijing and Shanghai, it said.

Authorities raise Mount Agung’s threat warning to highest level

In January-September, Bali received 4.5 million foreign tourist arrivals, nearly half of the 10.5 million arrivals in Indonesia.

Chinese have overtaken Australians to become the top visitors to Bali, representing around a quarter of arrivals.

Previously, stranded passengers in Bali had been advised to take a long bus ride and then a ferry hop to Java island and onto airports such as Surabaya.

Asked about the economic impact of the eruption, Indonesia’s Tourism Minister Arif Yahya has estimated that since the volcano warning level was first raised in September the loss in revenue could be more than US

$650 million.

Agung looms over eastern Bali to a height of just over 3,000 meters (9,800 feet). Its last major eruption in 1963 killed more than 1,000 people and razed several villages.

Authorities are urging people living up to 10 km (6 miles) from the volcano to move to emergency centres, but some are reluctant to leave homes and livestock.

The disaster mitigation agency said on Wednesday about 43,000 people had moved to shelters, but many were thought to be staying put as up to 100,000 people are estimated to be living in the danger zone.

“We cannot predict whether it (a major eruption) will be bigger than 1963, but … according to our evaluation the potential for a full-scale eruption is still high,” Devy Kamil Syahbana, an official at Indonesia’s centre for volcanology and geological disaster mitigation centre, told Reuters.

Unemployment rate at 3.1% as of June 2017; Employment rate continues to increase

0

SINGAPORE: The seasonally adjusted resident unemployment rate rose from 3 per cent in June 2016 to 3.1 per cent in June this year, according to the latest figures released by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) on Thursday (Nov 30).

In the Labour Force in Singapore Advance Release 2017 report, MOM said the lower employment rate for those aged 15 and above, which declined from 65.3 per cent to 64.9 per cent, reflected population ageing and the “higher propensity of youths to postpone entry into the labour force as they pursue further education”.

The employment rate for residents aged 25 to 64 continued to increase, from 80.3 per cent to 80.7 per cent during the same period. For residents aged 65 and over, the employment rate increased from 25.5 per cent to 25.8 per cent.

There was also a difference between the unemployment rates for professionals, managers, executives and technicians (PMETs) compared to non-PMETs.

The unemployment rate for PMETs fell slightly from 3.1 per cent in June 2016 to 3 per cent in June 2017, and their long-term unemployment rate also improved from 0.9 per cent to 0.7 per cent in the same period.

MOM said this could have been aided by enhancements to programmes that assist PMETs, especially those aged 40 and over, in securing employment.

However, unemployment among non-PMETs rose in 2017 from 4.2 per cent in June 2016 to 4.5 per cent in June this year.

These workers found it harder to secure a job with the continued decline in non-PMET job vacancies, MOM said.

Nonetheless, they are unlikely to be unemployed for long as their long-term unemployment rate for non-PMETs remained unchanged at 0.7 per cent, it added.

INCOME GROWTH UP WITH IMPROVEMENT IN ECONOMY

According to the report, the median income of full-time employed residents including employer CPF contributions rose faster year-on-year by 4.2 per cent in June 2017 compared to 2.7 per cent in June last year in nominal terms, and 3.7 per cent compared to 3.3 per cent in real terms.

This was due to the improvement in economic conditions and demand for higher-skilled manpower, MOM said.

Over the last five years from June 2012 to June 2017, real income at the 20th percentile grew at a sustained pace of 4.2 per cent per annum, faster than the median of 3.4 per cent per annum.

The growth was supported by Government initiatives to raise incomes of low-wage workers, MOM said. Real income growth for both groups were significantly faster than in the preceding five years, it added.

“For real income growth to be sustained, firms will have to continue to transform and grow to become more productive. In a manpower-lean environment, it is also important for firms to adopt progressive human capital practices. They will have to invest in their workers and build inclusive workplaces to value every employee regardless of age, gender and qualification,” the Manpower Ministry said in a press release.

MOM said that the Government will also need to press on with efforts to help low-wage workers be better deployed, allow older workers to remain in employment longer and make more flexible work arrangements available, especially for those with caregiving responsibilities.

NTUC assistant secretary-general Patrick Tay said in a Facebook post that the rise in employment among those aged 25 and over, the decrease in unemployment for PMETs and the rise in median gross monthly income show that tripartite initiatives in the employment, employability and skills upgrading of workers are showing positive effects.

However, he said he still foresaw “structural challenges (in) the coming years” including those as a result of digital disruption, digitalisation, robotisation, mechanisation and artificial intelligence.

“Moving ahead, the tripartite partners (nationally and sectorally) need to work even more closely together as we operationalise the various industry transformation maps that are being launched to transform the 23 sectors,” he said.

Editor’s note: A previous version of this story said that the unemployment rate was the highest since 2010. This is incorrect. The unemployment rate declined from March to June this year.

A 33-year-old woman, Sng Yu Qin, got into a scuffle with her parents in their flat at Block 200 Toa Payoh North during a dispute on May 11, at around 6pm.

Sng continued hitting her parents in front of police officers who were dispatched to the scene, and also hurled vulgarities at the four officers when advised to stop.

During the incident, Sng allegedly hit her mother’s head, back, and kicked her in the nether regions, reported Shin Min Daily News.

She also reportedly kicked her father in his chest before the officers arrived.

When the officers arrived at the flat to mediate the situation at around 7pm, Sng hit her mother’s back in their presence.

She hurled vulgarities at the officers and demanded that they leave, before tearing up a police statement recorded from one of her victims.

In an official statement issued by the Singapore Police Force (SPF), it said that Sng, along with seven others were charged on Wednesday (Nov 29) with using abusive language and causing hurt to officers.

If found guilty of voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant in the discharge of his duty, they can be jailed up to 12 months and/or fined up to $5,000.

Those convicted of using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty can be jailed for up to four years and/or fined.

The police stressed that they take a serious view against people who obstruct the police officers from carrying out their duties or causing them harm.

Chinese actress Liu Yifei beat out 1,000 hopefuls to nab role as Disney's Mulan

0

Chinese actress Liu Yifei is set to star as the titular female warrior in Disney’s live-action adaptation of the classic Chinese epic, Mulan.

Liu was cast after a yearlong search worldwide, beating nearly 1,000 hopefuls for the role, the Associated Press reported.

A team of casting directors travelled across five continents for the demanding role, which requires mastery of martial arts, ability to speak English and the ineffable charisma to partake the role of a Disney protagonist.

Disney, which has been criticised in the past for casting Caucasian actors for Asian roles, focused on discovering an ethnically Chinese young woman to play Hua Mulan, who impersonates herself as a man to take her ailing father’s place in the battlefield in the fifth-century.

Liu, a prominent young star in China’s entertainment industry, is most praised by the public for her pure and innocent looks and image.

She is fluent in English, having spent some years of her childhood in Queens, New York, and a graduate of Beijing Film Academy, one of the top institutions for cinema arts.

Liu has starred in English films before, including The Forbidden Kingdom (2008) opposite Jackie Chan and Jet Li and Outcast (2014), alongside Nicolas Cage and Hayden Christensen. Liu also worked with Emile Hirsch in The Chinese Widow, which opened the Shanghai International Film Festival in June.

The film will be helmed by Niki Caro and set for a release in 2019. Chris Bender, Jason Reed and Jake Weiner will be producing the film. House of Flying Daggers and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon producer Bill Kong will be executive producer.

The original animated version in 1998, voiced by Ming-Na Wen, Eddie Murphy and B.D. Wong, earned US$304.3 million (S$409 million) worldwide as well as Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations.
