Man visits GF in hospital, breaks 3 of her ribs over monetary dispute instead

0

A man visited his girlfriend who had been hospitalised but shoved her to the floor during a dispute over monetary issues, breaking three of her ribs and causing various other injuries.

The incident happened on May 5, 2016, and the man, Ke Jian Liang, was sentenced on Thursday (Nov 30) to 2 weeks’ jail and fined $1,000, reports Lianhe Wanbao.

Court documents revealed that the victim had been warded after getting stung by a sea creature during a diving session in Terengganu, Malaysia on May 4, 2016.

She subsequently returned to Singapore and sought treatment at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, where she was warded.

Ke visited her the following day.

During the session, the two got into an argument over financial matters.

The altercation intensified and Ke became outraged.

He started throwing items on the floor, hurling vulgarities and shoved the victim.

Ke also grabbed a pillow and attempted to hit the victim’s head.

So as not to alarm the nurses outside, Ke blocked the door to the room.

The victim attempted to run out to look for help but was pushed by Ke.

She hit a wooden bed frame and fell on the floor.

The victim was unable to stand after that.

She dragged herself to the nurse call button and requested for assistance.

A nurse quickly attended to her, and under her instructions, called the police.

Ke left before the police arrived.

The victim broke three ribs, had difficulty breathing, suffered bruises and trauma to her spine from Ke’s assault.

She had to extend her stay in the hospital until Aug 31.

After the incident, the victim told Ke that she wanted to break up with him.

Ke continuously harassed her by sending her multiple messages on May 20, 2016.

In many of the messages, Ke insulted and used vulgarities to demean the victim.

In his mitigation plea, Ke’s legal representative said that Ke is remorseful for his actions and had even offered the victim a $7,800 cheque to alleviate her medical bills.

However, the victim rejected the cheque.

Frustrated Jetstar passengers shout at airport staff after being stranded at Bangkok airport for 24 hours

0

Passengers on a Jetstar flight from Bangkok to Singapore expected to reach Singapore on Nov 29 but instead, were stranded at Suvarnabhumi Airport for nearly 24 hours.

Stomp contributor AMadSingaporean informed Stomp that he was scheduled to depart Bangkok on flight 3K1514 at 9.20pm local time on Wednesday (Nov 29).

However, they were informed that the flight was postponed to 12am.

“After reaching the gate, they put up a sign saying ‘Jetstar Bangkok to Singapore, indefinite delay’,” said the Stomp contributor who was in Bangkok for business.

He told Stomp that their flight was then further postponed to 2.20pm on Thursday (Nov 30) and the passengers were provided overnight accommodation at a hotel.

However, when they arrived at the airport the next day, their flight was delayed again without notice.

When they arrived at Gate G1A, they discovered it was assigned to passengers flying with Hong Kong Airlines instead.

The Stomp contributor shared a video taken at the departure gate, showing the passengers expressing their frustration over the delays to an airport employee.

“We want to get our luggage and we want to get out of here,” one man said to the female airport staff member.

She asked for their patience and to give her one hour to confirm the details of their flight but one woman shouted:

“No, no, no! We are not going to wait anymore!”

When the woman said she cannot provide any confirmation, a man shouted at her:

“You are not confirmed, why you come here? You spend so much time in the back room do what? (sic)”

“We have waited enough already,” another woman chimed in.

The passengers also expressed frustration at having to take an extra day off of work because of the delay.

In response to Stomp’s media queries, a Jetstar spokesman said that the delay was due to a “series of technical issues with the aircraft”.

“We apologise to all affected passengers who had been inconvenienced by the delay of 3K1514 from Bangkok to Singapore on 29 November 2017,” she said.

“Our engineers on-ground worked hard to conduct tests on the aircraft but it has taken longer than expected,” she added.

She confirmed that the flight was rescheduled to depart at 8pm local time and would arrive in Singapore at 11.30pm on Thursday.

“To ensure the well-being of our customers, passengers were provided hotel accommodation and meal vouchers including refreshments at the airport,” she said.

“The safety of our customers and crew is always our top priority.

“Once again, we apologise to all customers and thank them for their patience.”

The e-scooter rider who tragically lost his life in an accident with a double-decker bus at Kaki Bukit yesterday (Nov 30) was described as ‘kind-hearted, helpful and friendly’ by his cousin, Ms Fauziah Mohammed Mydin.

Mr Zanri, another cousin of the victim told The Straits Times that the victim, Atan Amat, had been working as a cleaner at an SMRT depot. He was not married and lived with his younger sister, his only sibling.

Gong Cha reopens in Singapore – here's what else is new

0

Taiwanese bubble tea chain Gong Cha returned to Singapore today with the opening of a new flagship outlet at SingPost Centre.

It temporarily exited Singapore earlier this June when Royal Tea Taiwan, the company behind the Gong Cha brand, did not renew a previous franchise agreement.

After four months of absence, Gong Cha finally made its comeback today under a new master franchisee, Gong Cha (Singapore).

Gong Cha (Singapore) is helmed by Mr Kang Puay Seng, the co-founder and ex-managing director of local soy milk brand Mr Bean.

We are all ready to serve you tomorrow, see you at our new store at SingPost Centre!

“Singapore has always been an important market for us, and we believe that our new master franchisee will give the brand a new lease of life here,” said Mr Lee, CEO of Royal Tea Taiwan.

Previously, co-founder of Royal Tea Taiwan, Mr Kim Soo-Min, mentioned that they’re not bringing Gong Cha back to compete with LiHo.

(Quick backgrounder: LiHo founder Rodney Tang was the one who brought the Gong Cha franchise to Singapore back in 2009)

Instead, it wants to “bring new colour to the Singapore market, for example, by introducing a more modern look to our stores and logo and a new menu which we’ll customise for Singapore customers.”

MUCH ANTICIPATED RETURN

Since the new partnership between Royal Tea Taiwan and Gong Cha (Singapore) was announced in August, thousands of Gong Cha fans in Singapore have been waiting eagerly for its return.

In fact, the Gong Cha (Singapore) Facebook page attracted more than 20,000 followers the moment it was set up last July.

And when Gong Cha officially announced its return on November 28, it garnered over 70,000 views within just 3 days.

As it makes its grand return, Gong Cha made clear that it aims to be “bigger and better”.

In line with this relaunch, Gong Cha has pretty much revamped its brand with new packaging, new flavours, and a new store layout.

Adding on to original favourites, Gong Cha has launched two new series, namely Tea Latte and Smoothie. Prices will remain the same, and new flavours will be priced from $4.30 onwards.

Some of the new drink highlights include Matcha Milk Tea Latte with Red Bean, Purple Sweet Potato Milk Tea, Brown Sugar Fresh Milk Oolong, and Strawberry Popcorn Fresh Milk Tea.

Besides introducing new drinks, Gong Cha also wants to provide a better F&B experience to consumers with a fresh cafe concept.

Unlike previously, the new flagship outlet is no longer a takeaway bubble store. It can now sit 33 people so customers can hang around and enjoy their drink in a cosy environment.

It will also be offering a snack menu for the very first time, including their latest tea-infused biscuit creation.

FIRST, BUT DEFINITELY NOT THE LAST OUTLET

People queue for Gong Cha’s return at SingPost Centre

Gong Cha (Singapore) plans to open 50 stores islandwide in the next five years.

The next 10 to 15 outlets will open at prime mall locations, and the second outlet is slated to open at Takashimaya.

As they expand their footprint in Singapore, Gong Cha also wants to give back to the industry.

Mr Kang shared that the company will be offering Gong Cha scholarships in partnership with Singapore Polytechnic in the coming year.

“[We want] to encourage and empower like-minded youths to develop their potential to the fullest and keep the sector vibrant with their innovations.”

Japan court sentences US base worker to life for rape, murder: NHK

0

TOKYO – A Japanese court sentenced a former US military base worker to life in prison on Friday for the rape and murder of a woman on the southern island of Okinawa, public broadcaster NHK reported.

The Naha District Court found Kenneth Franklin Shinzato, 33, guilty of killing 20-year-old Rina Shimabukuro in April last year, NHK said.

A court spokesman told Reuters he was unable to immediately confirm the decision.

The case sparked anger on the island, where locals have long protested the presence of US military bases that they say imposes a heavy burden on Okinawa.

Okinawa hosts around 50,000 US nationals, including 30,000 military personnel and civilians employed at the bases.

In a bid to assuage locals, the United States last year agreed to limit legal protection and benefits to some US civilian contractors working for the military in Japan under a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) that dates back to 1960.

SOFA exempts personnel from requiring visas while in Japan, and has been criticised because it has been used by the US military to ship people home before Japanese police can capture them.

Other incidents involving US personnel have stirred resentment among Okinawans.

On Nov. 19, a local man was killed in road accident after his van collided with a car driven by a US Marine suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol. The US military responded by imposing a drinking ban for personnel in Japan on or off base.

5 arrested over elephant killing in Sri Lanka

0

COLOMBO – Sri Lankan police have arrested five men for allegedly killing a wild elephant, with officers seizing ivory and tusk-cutting tools, officials said Friday.

Villagers in the island’s northwest had alerted wildlife authorities after a popular local elephant called “Dala Poottuwa”, or crossed tusker, disappeared.

Its carcass was later found with a bullet wound in the skull.

Authorities broke up what they say is a poaching network as part of their investigation, charging five men with killing the elephant.

“They had in their possession several tools used to cut tusks (and) two ivory pendants,” said police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera.

Elephants are protected under Sri Lankan law and poachers can face the death penalty for killing one.

Tusked elephants are rare in Sri Lanka, accounting for less than five per cent of the island’s estimated elephant population of around 6000. That figure has declined from the last official census of the island’s elephants, which identified more than 7300 animals.

Powerful cyclone kills at least 16 in India, Sri Lanka amid warnings that storm will intensify

0

NEW DELHI – A powerful cyclone has killed at least 16 people across India and Sri Lanka, uprooting trees and cutting power for millions amid warnings on Friday (Dec 1) that the storm would intensify.

Disaster officials said nine people were killed in India and seven in neighbouring Sri Lanka, most crushed by trees ripped up by destructive winds raging at 130km per hour.

Warships have been deployed to comb the southeastern coast for fishing boats missing in wild seas, India’s Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said.

Another official said an estimated 100 crew were aboard the missing vessels, with fears for their safety.

Torrential wind and rain unleashed by Cyclone Ockhi has shut down schools in Chennai, a coastal Indian city of seven million where conditions are set to worsen.

Images broadcast from southern India showed the scale of the destruction as the cyclone reached the shore, with electricity poles toppled and trees torn asunder.

Tourists in Kochi, a coastal city in the southern Kerala state, have been told to stay away from popular beaches, where huge waves are pounding the shore.

Power was cut for millions in Kerala and neighbouring Tamil Nadu state as the storm made its way from Sri Lanka, with India’s meteorological department warning of worse to come.

“The system is very likely to intensify further during the next 24 hours,” the department said in its update.

India’s eastern coast – including state capitals like Chennai and Bhubaneswar that are home to millions – is prone to seasonal storms that wreak immense damage between April and December. In 1999, more than 8,000 people were killed when a cyclone battered the eastern state of Orissa.

HIIT to get more emphasis in revamp of SAF’s fitness regimen

0

SINGAPORE: Soldiers in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) will soon have customised training programmes to match the unique physical demands of each vocation and each individual’s ability.

This was announced by the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) on Friday (Dec 1) at the launch of the Centre of Excellence for Soldier Performance (CESP).

The newly opened centre is supported by a range of deep domain experts such as sports scientists, nutritionists, physiotherapists, human factors engineers and psychologists to help optimise soldiers’ fitness and performance.

Under the new vocation-specific training, new fitness regimes like high intensity interval training (HIIT) will be introduced to increase the efficiency of soldiers.

HIIT is characterised by brief bursts of very intense exercise interspersed with longer periods of easy recovery.

A typical HIIT workout lasts less than 15 minutes, including a warm-up and cool-down, but has been shown in multiple studies to provide health and fitness benefits that are the same as or greater than an hour or more of continuous and relatively moderate exercise.

Rope battling, kettleball swings, sprint intervals and tyre flips, among others, are some examples of HIIT.

“We have brought together the Army Fitness Centre, the Soldier Performance Centre and the Soldier Systems Integration Laboratory to form the CESP,” said Second Minister for Defence Ong Ye Kung.

“They will make training more targeted and customised to each soldier’s abilities, and will allow us to integrate technology, sports science and nutrition to bring out the best in our soldiers.”

Mr Ong also added that the SAF will introduce fitness programmes that focus on injury prevention.

“We will implement “pre-habilitation” programmes to reduce the risks of common injuries. For example, for Infantry soldiers who are often required to bear heavy loads that may place more strain on their back muscles,” he said.

“So lower back strengthening exercises will be included in their fitness programmes to reduce the risk of such injuries.”

MORE “RESILIENCE-BUILDING CONCEPTS” FOR BMT

Basic Military Training (BMT) will also undergo changes to focus more on “resilience-building concepts” and skills to combat stress and anxiety.

Even after soldiers have completed their BMT, they will continue to practice resilience-building exercises by being exposed to “stressors typically encountered in combat operational settings”.

Dietary habits of soldiers will also be targeted with a revised Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) to help soldiers consume healthy snacks, like oat bars and bananas, between meals and before training exercises.

According to MINDEF, “nutritious snacks which are correctly timed” will aid in soldiers’ recovery after physical exercise.

Operationally Ready National Servicemen (NSmen) and non-combat NSmen will also have programmes catered to them to ensure that they remain “engaged in healthy lifestyle”.

“This will maximise participation and promote a strong fitness culture for our soldiers,” said MINDEF.

Other aspects like injury management and psychological well-being are also set to be enhanced.

However, Commander of the 9th Division and Chief Infantry Officer Andrew Lim added that they were not purely focusing on scientific methods.

“Essentially we are not just looking at the physical aspect of adopting the best scientific methods,” he said.

“We are also talking about nutrition, the psychology of sports, how we can better motivate our soldiers, as well as prehabilitation and rehabilitation in the event they get injured, and how we can better get them back up to speed in terms of training requirements,” he added.

The SAF is getting help from external organisations in their pursuit of maximising a soldier’s potential, having signed a Memorandum of Understanding with SportSG and the Health Promotion Board earlier this year to leverage on their expertise.

Crowds form as Gong Cha returns to Singapore

0

SINGAPORE: Even before the official opening of bubble tea chain Gong Cha’s new flagship outlet at SingPost Centre, a queue of excited customers had already formed, some of whom had queued overnight to get their fix of bubble tea.

More than 200 people were in line ahead of the store’s opening on Friday (Dec 1), according to Gong Cha staff.

One junior college student, who wanted to be known only as Daryl, was the first in line, together with his friends. He had queued since 10pm on Thursday.

“We really like Gong Cha and we saw the store was opening when we passed by at around 5pm yesterday,” he said. “Then when I saw there was no one in line at around 10pm, I decided to queue.”

The group spent their time doing work and watching movies. And they got a surprise when the chain’s CEO – Mr Kang Puay Seng – showed up with supper for them.

“We were quite shocked when we found out who he was, and he chatted with us and said we were passionate about Gong Cha,” said Daryl.

For his effort, he got to participate in the official launch ceremony by inserting a giant straw into a cup of bubble tea – and 99 cups of free drinks.

There were also perks for those in line, including getting a medium pearl milk tea for S$1, and a free limited-edition Gong Cha mug.

The 850-sq-ft outlet is furnished with a “fresh F&B concept”, aimed at providing customers with the “Gong Cha experience”, the company said.

Gong Cha will also be offering a snack menu for the first time, which includes a tea-infused biscuit creation.

The company plans to open 50 stores islandwide over the next five years.
