Philippine army's elite troops in Singapore for urban warfare training

0

SINGAPORE – Forty members of the Philippine Army’s Special Operations Command were sent to Singapore for a two-week urban warfare training.

The training, which comes two months after the Philippines ended its five-month campaign against ISIS-linked fighters in Marawi City, is held from Dec 4 to 15, Army spokesperson Lt Col Ray Tiongson said.

In a separate Facebook post, Singapore defence minister Ng Eng Hen emphasised the need for ASEAN member states to work together to fight terrorism.

“If extremists gain a foothold in any country around us, they will launch attacks against all ASEAN cities – that is the key lesson in dealing with Al Qaeda and ISIS. These groups can be defeated, but we will be stronger and that much more effective if we do it together,” he said.

The elite soldiers will train at the Murai Urban Training Facility.

“This professional exchange is mutually beneficial to SAF soldiers who would also be able to learn from their counter-terrorism fight in Marawi,” Mr Ng said.

The crisis started on May 23, when government forces tried to arrest Isnilon Hapilon, who was then the purported emir of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group in Southeast Asia.

The battle lasted for five months and resulted to massive displacement of civilians and deaths of close to 1,000 people.

Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana declared the termination of combat operations in Marawi City last Oct 23, a week after the deaths of Hapilon and Omar Maute, the main leaders of the siege.

Singapore offered humanitarian aid and surveillance drones during the five-month siege.

Chinese tourist loses almost $50,000 in luxury items to thieves at Thailand beach

Two Chon Buri residents were arrested early Tuesday morning for allegedly stealing a Chinese tourist’s valuables worth Bt1.2 million (S$49,585).

Tourist police inspector Pol Major Piyapong Ensan said jet-ski driver Rattanapol Sae-oui, 21, and Surasak Intarachote, 50, were charged with stealing an iPhone X worth Bt50,000, a Bt600,000 jade necklace and pendant and a Bt600,000 diamond ring.

The items were inside a waterproof bag that tourist Zhu Jiang, 28, had set aside while playing in the sea off Koh Lan Beach on Monday. A CCTV camera recorded one of the suspects picking up the bag and walking away.

Rattanapol was arrested at Ta Waen Beach at 1am and allegedly confessed to the theft. He said he’d kept the necklace and pendant but discarded the phone and gave the diamond ring to Surasak, who sold it. Rattanapol is charged with theft and Surasak with possession of a stolen item.

Rescued dog sacrifices life to save owner from deadly snake

0

We don’t deserve dogs.

More than just being man’s best friends, dogs have shown us countless times that their selfless love for us knows no limit. We’ve heard a lot of stories of dogs bravely rescuing humans in dangerous situations, and in some cases, even sacrificing their lives for us.

Meet Jago, an aspin dog who bravely saved his mom from a snake.

Jago was one of the dogs that Jonah Enriquez rescued last July 2016. Jonah has been rescuing dogs and cats for four years now. She has a mini-shelter in Samal, Bulacan with 58 dogs and 18 cats. According to Jonah, someone reported that a dog was abandoned by his owners in a house that’s up for sale. He was locked in a small cage with no food for a month-until Jonah rescued him.

Like most abandoned dogs, Jago was so traumatized by his experience that he initially did not allow Jonah to touch him. But after three days, Jonah was finally able to hug Jago. Who would have thought that this rescued dog will actually save his rescuer one day?

In a recent post by Jonah on her Facebook, she recounted how Jago saved her from a snake that was about to attack her as she was cleaning the shelters. She said in her post that Jago didn’t stop attacking the snake until he was sure that it was dead. But Jonah was worried that he may have been bitten by it.

on Facebook

Hindi ko po alam mararamdaman ko ngaun para akong pinagsakluban ng langit at lupa..habang naglilinis po ako sa shelter…

Posted by Jonah Lynne Bugay Enriquez on Saturday, 2 December 2017

And he was. Jonah said that Jago ran to his hut, cried, and laid down within a few minutes, then died. Jonah said that he had many snake bites-on his snout, nose, and neck. They didn’t get to confirm what kind of snake it was. Some said it’s a cobra, while others think it’s a viper. But one thing is for sure, it was a poisonous snake that would have put Jonah in a grave situation if it weren’t for Jago’s sacrifice.

We salute your bravery, Jago! We know they gave you a grand hero’s welcome in doggo heaven. We hope you’ll find all the treats and cuddles you deserve there *sobs hysterically*.

He saw smoke billowing out from the window of 9th floor unit.

By then, SCDF officers had already arrived and had to conduct forced entry as the main door was locked. They also subsequently gained access into the burning bedroom through a window along the corridor.

The fire involved the contents of a bedroom and was extinguished with a water jet.

Window panes of the bedroom were found shattered prior to SCDF’s arrival and a charred body of a man was also found in the bedroom.

In response to queries from Stomp, the police said that the man was found lying motionless and was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.

Stomp understands that a cooking gas cylinder was found in the bedroom of the affected unit.

SCDF is also investigating the cause of the fire.

9-hour rainbow in Taiwan may be the longest-lasting yet

0

Many people count themselves lucky to catch a glimpse of a rainbow, but they may now have to dispel the notion that the sight only lasts for a fleeting moment.

Two professors in Taipei recently found out that a rainbow may last for as long as nine hours.

On Nov 30, the pair from Chinese Culture University’s Department of Atmospheric Science documented what may be the most enduring light show ever.

The rainbow was in the sky from 6.57am to 3.55pm, a duration minutes shy of a full nine hours.

It felt like a gift from the sky… It’s so rare!” one of the professors Chou Kun-hsuan said.

Photos posted on the university’s Facebook page showed colourful arches over the campus’ Chinese style architecture and lush greenery, which made for an especially scenic sight.

And there was not just one, but four – two primary and two supernumerary – rainbows, according to Chou.

If confirmed, this will become the longest-lasting rainbow recorded, beating the previous record of six hours observed in Yorkshire, England, in March 1994.

To apply for Guinness World Record’s “longest-lasting rainbow”, the professors are gathering more evidence from those who witnessed the unusual phenomenon on campus that day.
