Ten-year-old August “Auggie” Pullman (Jacob Tremblay) steals hearts within minutes of making his introduction-his head still covered in his beloved astronaut helmet-in Stephen Chbosky’s Wonder.
Auggie is creative, has a passion for all things scientific and aspires to visit the moon. Once he removes his helmet, we learn something else he already knows about himself: his juvenile face is scarred, his eyes tear-shaped and his earlobes small flaps. Having undergone 27 surgeries-none of which, he says, have made him look quite “ordinary”-and grown up homeschooled by his doting mother Isabel (Julia Roberts), he isn’t excited to go for his first day at a private middle school.
In middle school, Auggie faces unrelenting ridicule and experiences what it means to have and keep friendships-all while he comes to terms with his condition. He is well liked by his peers (and maintains that from his audience) by demonstrating his knack for winning people over despite his reserved nature. What is, arguably, most impressive about this indelibly clever and good-hearted pre-teen is that he remains his nerdy, authentic self in the wake of the challenges he is met with, as opposed to acting up. Perhaps this can be attributed to his family’s perennial support, which he can count on even when he might not want it.
The two-hour film leans on its talented cast to tell its earnest and sweet family story. Jacob Tremblay as Auggie delivers a strong performance, inviting the audience to emotionally invest in his character development throughout the course of the film. Izabela Vidovic, who plays Auggie’s sister Olivia “Via” Pullman, effortlessly captures the despondency of a teen who has had to silently deal with her parents’ benign neglect of her since Auggie’s birth. Julia Roberts portrays a selfless and unassuming mother who is tasked with juggling the feelings of everyone in the Pullman household, and is well placed along Owen Wilson who plays Auggie’s thoughtful and sensitive dad.
Based on the number one New York Times bestseller of the same name by RJ Palacio, it conforms to the multi-character narration style of the book. While this may not work for all movies, in Wonder, an awareness of varied perspectives gives rise to an understanding of each character’s feelings, motives and responses, and how this contributes to the larger plot. It’s wonderful (pun intended?) how Chbosky takes this story about a little boy with a genetic deformity and weaves it around the people important to him: his parents (Julia Roberts & Owen Wilson), his sister (Izabela Vidovic), his pet dog Daisy, his friends (as well as enemies) at school, and memorable English teacher Mr. Browne (Daveed Diggs).
Overall, Wonder both moves and amuses as it explores the dynamics of Auggie’s life at school and at home. Packed with some cliche poster-worthy quotes you can find in Palacio’s spinoff 365 Days of Wonder: Mr. Browne’s Book of Precepts, this sentimental film is sure to tug at your heartstrings with its universal message of promoting kindness and acceptance-a message that can be appreciated by one and all.

SINGAPORE: Enfagrow A+ Malaysia has issued a statement informing consumers how to identify packets of fake infant formula that were sold in Johor Baru.
In a Facebook post on Monday (Dec 11), Enfagrow A+ Malaysia said that the only affected product is the Enfalac A+ Step 1 in 1.8 kg boxes that included three foil packs in each box.
The easiest way to identify the counterfeit product is to examine the individual foil pouches, the company said.
The genuine Enfalac A+ Step 1 pouches are a bit “puffy” while the counterfeit pouches are tight-fitting to the powder.
The pouches also have distinctive sharp creases on both sides that are not present in genuine pouches, the company said.
The fake infant formula boxes were only sold in Iskandar Puteri, Taman Mutiara Rini, Taman Orkid, and Taman Nusa Bestari.
“An extensive market search has confirmed no suspect product except for this specific packaging format in this limited geographic area,” the company said.
So far, only 210 counterfeit packs were discovered, but the company said investigations are ongoing to completely eliminate their presence. The retail searches conducted this past week were based on information and investigation results provided by its manufacturer Mead Johnson Nutrition.
“The searches identified a small percentage of suspect product in a handful of retail outlets within a limited geography in Skudai, Johor Baru,” it said.
The statement also said that the Malaysian authorities are actively pursuing the counterfeiting operation.

If consumers discover that they have purchased pouches of Enfalac A+ Step 1 1.8 kg with packaging matching that of a fake one, they should immediately contact the Mead Johnson consumer care line at 1 800 88 3585 (available Monday to Sunday 9.am – 9pm) to report their case and receive replacement product.
Consumers that have already opened the packaging can also contact Mead Johnson for a replacement product.
Singapore’s Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) on Monday warned that consumers should be cautious when they shop for food overseas or online.
“Consumers have a role in protecting themselves. As a general guide, consumers should purchase food from reputable sources, such as major supermarkets and retailers,” AVA said.
“Shopping for food overseas or online may be convenient but consumers should exercise caution,” it added. “Consumers must be aware that there may be food safety risks associated with such food items. When in doubt of the source or safety of the food product, do not purchase it.”
SINGAPORE: Singapore has joined a search-and-rescue operation to find two Malaysian anglers who went missing after their boat sank near Pedra Branca on Sunday (Dec 10).
Tan Soon Heng, 35, and Chan Chong Kuok, 51, who are from Johor Baru, disappeared after their boat reportedly sank about 500 metres from Middle Rocks, which is near Pedra Branca.

A Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) patrol boat was deployed immediately, but the boat had already sunk and the two men were missing, added Sanifah.
The operation resumed on Monday with personnel from the MMEA, Malaysia’s Marine Police and Royal Malaysian Army.
Singapore’s Defence Minister Dr Ng Eng said in a Facebook post on Monday that the Singapore Navy was sent to help on Sunday evening, with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore coordinating the rescue mission.
Indonesian authorities have also joined in the search.

SINGAPORE: A club at St James Power Station had its public entertainment licence suspended last Friday (Dec 8) after preliminary investigations by the police found that a vice syndicate was offering sexual services there.
Channel NewsAsia understands that the club is Rupee @ St James – Bollywood Gentlemen’s Club.
It is the first club to have its public entertainment licence suspended under the Public Entertainments Act, which was passed in May to give police greater powers to deal with illicit activities.
In a news release on Monday, the police said nine women and two men between the ages of 21 and 54 were arrested for their suspected involvement in vice-related activities at the club after a police operation on Dec 4.
Police said preliminary investigations showed that the vice syndicate had been using the club to operate and provide sexual services to their clients.
Clients booked the services of the women, who are work pass holders, via the management of the club for between S$500 to S$1,000, police said.
Investigations are ongoing.
When Channel NewsAsia contacted Rupee club, a man who said he was the owner of the club said its management was not aware of the alleged vice activities and had nothing to do with the booking of such services.
“We do not condone or allow such immoral activity to go on. As far as investigations are ongoing, all we know there may have been one or two staff who may have engaged in such activities outside of the club working hours and on their own accord without any instructions from the management,” said the man who identified himself only as Mr Singh.
He added that if sexual services were part of the club’s business model, it would not be hiring performing artists to dance.
“It is very common in Bollywood club culture for customers to make payment of between S$100 to S$2,000 in exchange for small denominations of S$10 notes which are given to entertainers as dance tips,” he said.
A post on the club’s Facebook page said it is closed for upgrading until Dec 31.
Mr Singh said that the club’s licence has been suspended indefinitely while investigations are ongoing, but added that he still expects it to reopen by Dec 31.
“We would like to take this opportunity at the same time to do some upgrading and pest control works,” he told Channel NewsAsia.
