Dog owners can get licences for up to 3 years from March 2018: AVA

0

SINGAPORE: Dog owners will soon be able to apply for or renew the licences of their pet dogs for a period of up to three years, the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) announced on Friday (Dec 29).

In a media release, AVA said the change, which takes effect from March 1 next year, would make dog licensing easier and more convenient.

Currently, dog owners can only apply for annual licences. Under the revised scheme, new and existing dog owners can choose to apply for or renew their licence for one to three years.

Discounts will be given to dog owners who opt for the two or three-year licences and a 10 per cent rebate will also be extended to those who pay electronically.

AVA said the majority of dog owners were “supportive” of the multi-year licensing scheme when it was brought up in an online public consultation.

“The revision to allow the renewal of licences on a multi-year basis will help owners reduce the amount of administrative work required. We encourage dog owners to take up this scheme, and to opt for GIRO payment to avoid instances where there is a lapse when payments are not made,” said AVA’s animal management group director Jessica Kwok.

The updated dog licence price list in Singapore is as follows:

A playlist of songs to say good-bye (and good riddance) to 2017

0

Social media is a breeding ground for great ideas you can do for various occasions. A few days before New Year’s Eve, a new meme started wherein people would suggest songs to play at a certain time to “start your 2018 right.”

For example, one netizen suggested to play Evanescence’s “Bring Me to Life” at exactly 11:59:08. This is so that the first “Wake me up!” plays at midnight. And we all need that kind of motivation for 2018.

Of course, several others followed suit with songs to ring in 2018 with. We want to do it the right way too, so we decided to make a playlist to say good-bye to 2017. Don’t worry, we’re not going to ask you to play them at a specific time before midnight.

on Twitter

Let’s start off with a popular one: “Malaya” by Moira Dela Torre. It’s only fitting since this is the singer’s “freedom song.” This is like telling yourself and the people around you that you’re free from 2017’s clutches and ready to move forward. (Hashtag inspirational.)

Once you’re done with the waterworks, the next couple of songs will make you feel empowered. So feel free to sing Sara Bareilles’ “Brave” and Katy Perry’s “Firework.” We also put some Destiny’s Child there because why not?

If you had a less than perfect year because of a certain person or event, let Dua Lipa’s “IDGAF” and Rihanna’s “Take a Bow” reflect all your #feels. This is also your non-confrontational way of saying “FU” to 2017.

We’re ending this playlist with Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman” because we all need a dance track to keep our spirits up. It’s the new year after all, we should welcome it with open arms and several glasses of wine.

Time to bookmark this playlist so you can play it until Jan. 1, 2018. (Man, look how fast time flies!) Feel free to do the “If you play…” meme with any of the songs if you want to.

Maserati driver who hit TP officer in hit-and-run accident faces 15 more charges

0

The Maserati driver who was in a hit-and-run accident involving a traffic police officer has been slapped with 15 additional charges.

34-year-old Lee Cheng Yan now faces a total of 23 charges, including a charge for causing grievous hurt when he hit Staff Sergeant Khairulanwar Kahar when driving his car on Nov 17.

These new charges, mainly consisting of traffic offences, mark the fourth set of charges that have been brought against him.

According to The Straits Times, before he allegedly committed the traffic offences, he had been banned from holding or obtaining a driving licence for nine months, from July 4 to April 3 next year.

Court documents did not state what this disqualification was for.

Three of the additional 15 charges were for driving while under the period of disqualification.

Despite the ban, he purportedly drove a car on three separate occasions to Kaki Bukit Road 2 and Potong Pasir Avenue 3 between Nov 9 and 16. He is said to have done so without insurance.

Nine other charges that he faced included failing to stop and render assistance, after hitting Staff Sergeant Khairulanwar Kahar along Bedok Reservoir Road.

He is also accused of perverting the course of justice on Nov 17. After hitting the traffic police officer, he had allegedly abandoned the Maserati in Willow Avenue near Upper Aljunied Road.

He is also said to have thrown away a white T-shirt that he was wearing in order to hamper police investigations.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Quek Jing Feng told the court on Thursday that investigations into Lee – involving the Criminal Investigation Department and the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau – are ongoing.

DPP Quek also stated, “The current charges are not the full set.”

Some of Lee’s earlier charges include sending three threatening text messages to two men between May and July.

In July, he was also fined $13,500 for installing an illegal modification on his Maserati.

On July 6, Lee had allegedly duped an employee of a car rental company into believing that he had a valid Class 3 driving licence. As a result, the employee is said to have rented him a car – not the Maserati – for 29 days.

On Aug 4, Lee purportedly drove the rented car in Shaw Road, near Upper Paya Lebar, while he was banned from holding or obtaining a driving licence.

He was also involved in a road accident at Orchard Road in 2016 which resulted in a motorcyclist being injured.

Lee was previously out on bail of $20,000 but it has since been raised to $35,000 as the number of charges brought against him has gone up.

He is scheduled to be back in court on Jan 25 next year.

Current, former SMRT employees charged in $9.8m cheating scheme

0

SINGAPORE – Current and former employees of SMRT were charged in court on Friday of duping the transit operator into awarding millions of dollars of contracts to companies in which they had a financial interest.

The charges come after a string of mishaps on the transit system – including a collision last month that injured several people – that has led to public anger in a city-state long known for its efficient public services.

A current line manager at SMRT Trains Ltd, two former employees and a director of a Singapore construction company were charged with “cheating offences” that allegedly took place during 2007 to 2012 and involved contracts amounting to nearly S$9.8 million, the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) said in a statement.

Under Singapore law, cheating is punishable with up to 10 years in jail and fines.

One of the accused absconded to Malaysia in 2013 and was brought back to face charges in Singapore with the help of Malaysia’s Anti-Corruption Commission, CPIB said.

SMRT Trains Ltd is a fully owned subsidiary of SMRT Corp Ltd. SMRT Corp is fully controlled by state investor Temasek Holdings (Pte) Ltd.

SMRT Corp did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

S'porean woman dies in traffic accident while touring South Africa, sister injured

0

A Singaporean woman died in a traffic accident on Thursday (Dec 21) while touring South Africa with her sister.

The victim, Ms Koh Yuan Ling, 33, was killed while her sister, Ms Koh Yuan Jie is believed to have been injured, and conveyed to a local hospital for treatment.

According to The Straits Times, the Singapore High Commission in Pretoria is assisting the victims’ family members who have flown to South Africa.

Preliminary findings indicate that the two sisters were travelling on a rented vehicle, and the deceased had been the one driving.

During the time of the incident, the vehicle had struck a boundary fence, killing the elder sister and injuring her younger sibling.

Reporters visited the home of the two and spoke to a neighbour, Ms Wu, who told them that she had gotten news of the sisters being involved in an accident overseas.

On finding out that one of them had died, she sent her condolences, saying:

“The two girls were always polite and would greet us when they see us.”

She also told Lianhe Wanbao the two sisters often travel abroad, and they have an older brother.

The family of five stayed in the same flat and often travel overseas together.

Another neighbour, Ms Yan, divulged that Ms Koh Yuan Jie’s injuries were quite serious, and she would require a wheelchair.

However, her conditions have reportedly stabilised and she is predicted to be returning to Singapore on Tuesday (Jan 2, 2018).

A neighbour who did not wish reveal his name said that the deceased had just gotten her licence a year back, and was a relatively new driver.

This comes after another Singaporean family of four were involved in an accident at Arizona, leaving three dead and one injured.

Apple’s replacement iPhone batteries to cost S$38 in Singapore

The reduced price for out-of-warranty batteries for iPhone 6 or later models announced by the Cupertino-based company is one of the ways it is addressing customer backlash following revelations it slowed older phones with flagging batteries using software updates.

SINGAPORE: Apple on Friday (Dec 29) announced the local pricing for out-of-warranty iPhone battery replacements, the same day it apologised for its handling of the issue of flagging batteries on older phone models.

In that statement, the smartphone manufacturer said that to address customers’ concerns over how Apple tried to preserve user experience on older iPhone models by issuing software updates to slow them down, it would be slashing the price of these batteries from US$79 to US$29.

For Singapore, the price for the out-of-warranty battery replacements will be S$38, down from the original price of S$118, when the programme kicks in late January, Apple told Channel NewsAsia. Consumers can head to Apple’s store at Orchard Road or authorised resellers to get their batteries replaced, it added.

The earlier statement said the reduced pricing applies to anyone with an iPhone 6 or later whose battery needs to be replaced, starting in late January 2018 and worldwide through December 2018.

Apple also said it would issue an iOS software update with new features to allow users to have more information on the health of their mobile device’s batteries. This will come “early in 2018”, it added.

The apology and measures to mitigate the fallout from the incident some have called “batterygate” came after lawsuits were filed against the tech giant in the United States, Israel and France, while there are also reports that similar cases were being readied in South Korea.

The merged schools will be located at the schools whose name has been chosen for the combined entities. For example, students from Balestier Hill Primary will thus have to go to the existing Causuarina Primary School from 2019.

The merging of the schools, which was first announced in April, was done in response to falling birth rates and to ensure that each school has an adequate number of students for a meaningful educational experience, MOE said.

The education ministry said in its press release that it worked closely with all the merging schools throughout the process. The names of the merged schools were decided after considering a number of factors, such as the schools’ history and heritage, enrolments, as well as the stakeholders’ interests and the sentiments of all schools involved, the ministry said.

The merged schools will encompass the identities, strengths and cherished distinctiveness of both merging schools, MOE added. It also said the history of all the merged schools will be “formally documented and preserved at a heritage space” in the merged school’s building.

Previously, MOE also announced that eight junior colleges (JCs) will also be merged. The names of the merged JCs have not been announced yet.
