An orangutan who had been locked up in a wooden cage for two years by its captor in Western Borneo has been freed by an animal rescue organisation.
The four-year-old male orangutan named Kotap had been given to its captor, who locked him up so that the animal would not disturb the neighbours, the International Animal Rescue (IAR) said.
Forest department officials persuaded the captor to hand over the animal.
“Kotap lived a sad and solitary existence, unable to exercise or express any of the natural behaviours of a wild orangutan,” Alan Knight, the Chief Executive of the IAR said.
Kotap has been transferred to a rehabilitation centre where, after a period of quarantine, he will meet other rescued orangutans and embark on his journey back to the forest.
