SINGAPORE – Singapore swimmer Joseph Schooling has qualified for the 100m freestyle semi-finals, after placing second among eight swimmers in Heat 6 of the event, which was held just past midnight Singapore time on Aug 10.

He clocked in at 48.27s, breaking his previous record of 48.58s set at the SEA Games last year, The Straits Times reported.

Schooling is currently the sixth fastest swimmer in the semis. Australia’s Kyle Chalmers was the fastest man (47.9), followed by the United States’ Caeleb Dressel (47.91) and Britain’s Duncan Scott (48.01).

The semi-final will be held on Tuesday evening in Rio (Wednesday morning at 9.03am Singapore time).

Schooling will also be competing in the 100m butterfly, where he is expected to reach the final.
