SINGAPORE – The relationship between Singapore and the United Kingdom (UK) will not be affected by Brexit – Britain’s decision to leave the European Union – said British High Commissioner to Singapore Scott Wightman today (June 25).

Speaking to the media a day after the results of the referendum was announced, Mr Wightman said: “Prime Minister Lee in his Facebook post yesterday talked about the importance of the relationship (between Singapore and the UK) and the enduring nature of that relationship and it was clear as well that that is going to continue. I am sure as well that will be the case on the UK side.”

Mr Wightman pointed out that Singapore is home to more than 1,000 British companies, with many using the country as a regional base, Today Online reported. “They are attracted here because of the very supportive business environment that the government has created. They are attracted by the pool of talent offered here in Singapore.”

“Singapore and the UK will continue to be very important business partners,” he said.

Mr Wightman said that the Brexit decision will have a huge impact on Britain’s relationship with Europe, but he insisted that Britain will continue to be outwad facing, The Straits Times reported.
