Singapore: The COVID-19 multi-ministerial working group stated on Sunday (January 2) that the New Year’s Eve party in Clarke Quay involved some “flagrant violations” of safety management measures and “a potential super-spread incident”.
Videos circulating on social media show that on December 31st, people gathered in front of Riverside Point in Clarke Quay to welcome the New Year.
“Law enforcement agencies are investigating this matter,” the task force added, noting that such activities in many countries have been “suspended or reduced” this year.
“We want to remind everyone that we are still in a pandemic crisis and we still need to fulfill our civic responsibilities,” it said.
The working group stated that as a society, Singapore has done everything it can to “enhance our resilience.” The authorities urge the public to comply with COVID-19 rules so that “the situation will continue to improve and we can expect 2022 to become a more normal year”.
In a statement on Sunday night, a Clarke Quay spokesperson stated that the “improvised” gathering did not take place at the Clarke Quay property of CapitaLand, but instead took place in a building in the Clarke Quay area. The spokesperson added: “The safety of our customers is our top priority,” and urged revellers to “responsibly enjoy a good time.”
