What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object? We might finally have the answer on May 6 when Singapore’s Angela Lee and Japan’s Mei Yamaguchi face off for the Women’s Atomweight World title at ONE Championship’s fighting extravaganza ‘Ascent to Power’.
For the unfamiliar, Angela is a rising star in Asia’s mixed martial arts (MMA) scene. She has strong roots in Singapore and is part of the elite Evolve MMA fight team. Angela’s combination of solid striking and grappling skills had proven to be a potent formula for success as she remains unbeaten so far in her MMA career.
Said Angela at a media luncheon on May 3:
“I felt very honoured and excited for the fight after finding out that I was going to be in the main event.
“I really appreciate all the media support and promotions behind me but I’m 100 per cent focused on the fight and that’s all I’m worried about right now”.
At only 19-years-old, you would think that Angela would snap under the pressure as the day of the fight approaches, especially since she is facing a much more experienced opponent. She however keeps a positive attitude towards her preparations.
“I personally have no problems with the intensity of the training as the fight draws closer since I have been training since I was very young”, said Angela. “To me, the toughest part of preparing for competition is the diet since I have to make sure that my weight is on point by eating clean regularly”.
Since Angela has won all of her fights via submission, one would wonder if she is trying for a more daring finish this time round.
“I’m just looking to finish the fight as quick as possible whether that is via knockout, technical knockout (TKO) or submission. We will just have to wait and see on Friday night.”
