SINGAPORE – The 30-year-old man who raped a woman three times within a 20-minute period in 2013 has been sentenced to jail for 16 years, 10 months and two weeks, and will be given 22 strokes of the cane.
The Straits Times reported that the judge, in passing sentence, said that “the idea that one can walk safely on the public road in Singapore at any time of the day was shattered by the shocking and brazen acts of the accused that morning”.
Lim Choon Beng had said initially that he did not remember the rape, and claimed trial.
However, in a sudden turnabout, he pleaded guilty on May 4.
The attacks on the woman, which occured on Chinese New Year’s Eve, were so traumatising that the woman has said that she is reminded of the ordeal every Chinese New Year.
Prosecutors had sought at least 17 years’ jail and the maximum 24 strokes of the cane last week.
