KUCHING – Lin Dan of China denied Lee Chong Wei his 12th home title at Stadium Perpaduan in Petra Jaya.

On Sunday, Lin Dan gave an astounding show to beat home star Chong Wei 21-19, 21-14 in a 55-minute men’s singles final in the stadium packed with delirious fans.

It was Lin Dan’s first-ever Malaysian Open title after failing in the last three attempts in the finals in 2005, 2006 and 2015.

By winning the Malaysian Open title, Lin Dan’s collection of all the Superseries and major titles in the world is complete.

It was Lin Dan’s 25th win in 36 meetings against his nemesis Chong Wei.

Five-time world champion Lin Dan was estatic after overcoming his jinx at the Malaysian Open.

“It’s great to beat Chong Wei at his own home to win my first title here.

“I always bring the best when I play against Chong Wei…and today was another good match,” he said.

Chong Wei took his defeat in his stride.

“The first game was crucial. I had the lead but made errors and misjudged some of the shots. I lost focus,” admitted Chong Wei.

“Lin Dan played confidently in the second game but I could not lift mine. It’s disappointing to lose but I accept this defeat,” added Chong Wei, who will compete at the Asian Championships in Wuhan next.
