SINGAPORE – The licensing of used cooking oil (UCO) collectors will begin on Dec 1.
The National Environment Agency (NEA) said in a statement today (Nov 30) that there are about 50 used cooking oil collectors in Singapore, and the licensing scheme will ensure that they meet waste collection standards, including standards for the proper collection, storage and transportation of UCO.
UCO collected is processed locally or exported to be converted into non-edible commodities such as biodiesel.
NEA said those who wish to collect UCO will be required to obtain a General Waste Collector (GWC) licence from NEA.
All food establishments, such as food retail establishments and food manufacturers, will be required to engage licensed collectors for UCO collection by June 1, 2017, and will be reminded of the scheme through an advisory sent directly to their business addresses.
The advisory will contain a list of licensed UCO collectors.
Applications for the UCO collection licence will commence from tomorrow (Dec 1), said the statement.
All UCO collectors will have until June 1 next year to obtain their licence.
Collecting UCO without a licence or engaging an unlicensed UCO collector will each carry a maximum fine of $10,000.
