SINGAPORE: Sanrio’s popular lazy egg, Gudetama, is set to make its cafe debut on Wednesday (Nov 30) at Suntec City.
The cafe is a collaboration between homegrown brands Joe & Dough and The Soup Spoon, and its menu will feature, among others, 10 main dishes, four sides and five desserts – all inspired by scenes from the Gudetama character.

Its inspiration came from Joe & Dough’s Dawn Wee, who saw a clip of Gudetama on social media and the idea of starting the cafe began brewing.
Some of the cafe’s dishes are accompanied by tongue-in-cheek speech bubbles. On the dish Rib “I” Don’t Care, for example, Gudetama is seen saying ‘nua’ (Hokkien for ‘lazy’) while mouthing ‘bo chup’ (Hokkien for ‘could not care less’) on the Shoyu Ramen set.

The Soup Spoon’s Anna Lim told Channel NewsAsia that the collaboration saw both brands “pushing the boundaries”. They not only had to “gudetamise” the food but also ensured it was tasty and photogenic, she explained.
“We want to serve real food. I think that’s very important for us, and I think that’s why we’ve come together to do this. Because (Joe & Dough), they’re very good with their desserts and drinks, and our strength is more on the food. That’s why we’ve come together to curate this whole new menu, that actually stands for good, honest comfort food,” Ms Lim said.

The two F&B partners worked with award-winning food blogger, Little Miss Bento Shirley Wong, in styling the dishes.

Ms Wong said: “Beyond making the food look really cute and attractive, I think what’s so special about this collaboration is that I’m actually working on something that I really, really like and that I’m passionate about.
“I had so much fun creating them and I hope people like eating them as well,” the food blogger added.
