A 22-year-old Filipina-Australian model-makeup entrepreneur was under fire after netizens dug up her tweets dating back to 2013 and 2014 that smacked of racism.
In the contentious tweets unearthed by Reddit users, Lily May Mac mentioned how she preferred dating “white guys” over Asian men and at one point, even wished to be half-white. Aside from her distasteful tweets about Asian men, tweets in 2014 likened African men to “black dogs.”
“If another short Asian dude tries buying me a drink I’m going to puke on them,” read one of her tweets, which have been taken down following the hype.
In response to the online outrage, Mac took to the social networking site to air her apologies. “In light of what is resurfacing, I want to say sorry for what I said when I was obviously close-minded and away from public eye,” she tweeted on Thursday.
“It was wrong then and wrong now but I now know better,” she further said.
This triggered Eliza Romero, a Filipino-American photographer, to rant about Mac’s remarks. “Her dating preferences were clearly rooted in self-hatred and internalized racism,” she told the news site.
Mac, whose real name is Lily Macapinlac, is a pure Filipina according to a previous Facebook post by her mother, Elsie. “She’s pure Pinoy, [but] not really proud cause of the mentality of the Pinoy,” Elsie wrote in 2016, as cited by NextShark. “That’s why we migrated to Australia.”
Mac has over 3 million followers on her Instagram account and recently launched her debut cosmetics line-up Lily May Mac Collection.
Lily May Mac is not regarded as an Aussie by most Australians. Just ask any traditional Aussie down there. lol
