SINGAPORE – There are fewer public car parks offering free spaces on Sundays compared to six years ago.
Only 55 per cent of Government and Statutory Board car parks offer free parking on Sundays currently. The proportion was higher in 2005 and 2010 – at around 70 per cent, highlighted Senior Minister of State for National Development Desmond Lee in response to a question from Non-Constituency Member of Parliament Leon Perera in Parliament today.
Mr Lee said “in assessing whether to provide free parking, agencies have to balance the specific needs and parking demands of the area”, in a Channel NewsAsia report.
“For example, it may not be feasible to have free parking on Sundays in HDB carparks where there is high demand for parking from the local residents,” said Mr Lee in The Straits Times report.
The majority of Government and statutory board carparks are HDB residential ones. Others are run by agencies such as the Urban Redevelopment Authority, Sport Singapore, National Parks Board, and JTC Corp.
