SINGAPORE: The first dedicated facility for game developers and digital content creators was launched on Tuesday (Nov 29) by the Info-communications Media Development Authority (IMDA).

Called PIXEL Studios, the facility in one-north provides resources, training and more collaboration opportunities, “to spur the next generation of digital content creators and media professionals to explore innovative ways of content creation and storytelling,” said IMDA.

Facilities at the 25,000 sq ft space, which is managed by Nanyang Polytechnic, include thematic areas that can double up as sets for filming and production. For example, the meeting and seminar rooms are dressed up as a vintage diner, a kopitiam, a kitchen studio and make-up rooms.

The two-storey building will also cater to a larger community of game start-ups. There is 40 per cent more space at the new facility compared to the former Games Solution Centre’s premises at Block 71.

So far, 17 game start-ups are set to be located at PIXEL Studios from January 2017.

They can make use of production and technology tools such as a green screen studio equipped with professional video equipment, virtual and augmented reality gear as well as game engines.

There will also be platforms to help these companies launch and market their games in Singapore and globally.

To help content creators grow their skills or build sustainable businesses, PIXEL Studios will collaborate with established industry partners to conduct a range of workshops, consultation and networking sessions with experts.

Minister of Communications and Information Yaacob Ibrahim who opened the facility said: “Through the programmes, facilities and resources available, this will be a common place for content creators to meet with like-minded people from diverse backgrounds, across the media and tech sectors and experiment with new ways of media content creation and storytelling.”
