SINGAPORE – Holders of the National Registration Identity Card (NRIC) who turn 55-years-old after Jan 1, 2017, are now required to re-register for a new card.
The renewal process will mitigate security risks from misidentification of outdated photographs, especially for the elderly, the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said in a statement today.
Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents (PRs) who have replaced their NRICs in the 10 years before their 55th birthday are exempted from re-registration, ICA added.
ICA will also iris images during the NRIC collection to augment its identity verification methods besides photographs and fingerprints.
NRIC holders who are required to re-register will receive a notification letter from ICA one month before their 55th birthday. Reminders will also be sent six and nine months after the NRIC holder turns 55-years-old.
They will have one year to re-register, until their 56th birthday. Citizens and PRs residing abroad also have a one-year grace period to re-register on their return to Singapore.
Fees for the NRIC re-registration will remain at $10 for citizens and $50 for PRs – the same amount for NRIC registration at age 15 and re-registration at age 30.
