SINGAPORE: Come Dec 31, the Civic District will become a car-free activity space for the Marina Bay Singapore Countdown 2017, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) announced on Monday (Dec 5).

As part of celebrations to usher in the new year, activities such as movie screenings, a picnic, a concert as well as a fitness dance party will be held in the Civic District on New Year’s Eve itself, URA said. Other highlights include a waterfront bazaar, roving performances along the waterfront promenade, as well as 3D projection displays on the Fullerton Hotel Singapore’s facade which will happen each hour from 8pm until midnight.

Each facade show will be followed by a one-minute light, laser and fire show, as well as a preview of the fireworks show which will happen at the stroke of midnight.

An eight-minute fireworks display, combining light, laser and flames, will mark the beginning of 2017. The show will be choreographed to a rearranged version of the song Glaciers, by local band In Each Hand A Cutlass, URA said.

As such, St Andrew’s Road and Connaught Drive, which surround the Padang, will be closed to vehicles from 4pm on Dec 31 to 2am on Jan 1.

National Gallery Singapore, Asian Civilisations Museum, as well as Victoria Theatre and Victoria Concert Hall will also remain open until midnight on Dec 31, according to URA.

The authority added that there are a variety of activities leading up to New Year’s Eve that members of the public can take part in. These include free programmes at the Esplanade, as well as BounceOFF! Fiesta 2016 – a ticketed event featuring inflatable obstacle courses and slides at The Promontory, Bayfront Event Space, Event Square and the Marina Bay waterfront promenade.
