BEIJING – China will seek to regulate taxi apps such as Uber and Didi Kuaidi rather than ban them, Transport Minister Yang Chuantang said on Monday.
“We will legalise them through legislation … to allow a more diversified and quality [taxi] service to meet the people’s travel demands,” Yang told reporters on the sidelines of the National People’s Congress, China’s annual parliamentary session.
Talks about drafting new regulations for taxi apps began in last year’s NPC sessions. Proposed legislations have included plans to regulate drivers’ and vehicle licenses and to establish a mechanism to monitor their operation.
