Rescuers retrieved the body of a man early on Monday morning after he drowned below a Chiang Mai waterfall during the day.

The body of Chaiwat Longluem, 22, was found underwater at about five minutes after midnight in the creek below Wang Bua Ban Waterfall at the foot of Doi Suthep Mountain.

He was swept away and drowned while swimming in the creek on Sunday evening after runoffs caused it to quickly swell.

Following heavy rains, the authorities have banned swimming at three waterfalls in the Doi Suthep National Park until the waters subside.

The three waterfalls are the Wang Bua Ban, the Huay Kaew and Montha Than.
