“How can you love something so much that you can’t even understand?” is the first question any K-pop agnostic asks a fan who doesn’t speak Korean.
Incidentally, that is also the genesis for the K-pop parody by five Asian-American guys who have “started” a K-pop group that cannot speak Korean or sing and dance called…wait for it, Boys Generally Asian (BgA).
The group, which comprises of YouTuber Ryan Higa, musician David Choi, filmmaker Philip Wang, actor Justin Chon and musician Jun Sung Ahn released its first track and accompanying music video on Higa’s YouTube channel.
Titled Dong Saya Dae (I Need to Take A Sh*t), the video which has since been viewed over four million times, BgA lampoons K-pop stereotypes by singing auto-tuned Korean verses that do not make sense.
This includes: “Please open the refrigerator/Give me the salt quickly”, and “You are a girl/I am a hat/We are potatoes”.
The video itself spoofs Big Bang, a popular K-pop group that has fans who don’t speak Korean. Even the look of BgA members skews close to the looks of Big Bang members.
Talk about a committed parody.
