SINGAPORE – Just like anything else related to Yishun, the name for residents of the northen town is creating some buzz online.
They are called Yishunites, Nee Soon GRC MP Lee Bee Wah “revealed” in a Facebook post yesterday (Feb 16).
She used the term while commenting on a report by The Straits Times, “Why do some people make fun of Yishun?“, in which she also expressed her views.
Some Yishunites have been calling themselves that for years. It’s also an affectionate name for Yishun Secondary School students. But nobody cared, until now.
If you live in other parts of Singapore and are wondering if there is also a name you can call yourself, wonder no more.
Calling it a “stylo name”, the guys at Mediacock Singapore created a list of names for residents of other estates so they don’t feel left out.
The list has been shared over 3,500 times on Facebook since it was posted yesterday afternoon.

Yishun has become the butt of jokes online after everything from cat abuse to stabbing cases seemed to be happening there in short successions since 2015.

A tongue-in-cheek map posted on Reddit last September labelled Yishun as where the murderers and siao langs (Hokkien term for crazy people) were.
But with a name like Yishunite, we’re pretty sure the town of Yishun is cool again.
