As of 19 April 2016, American Express (Amex) cardholders in Singapore will be able to use their Apple devices as a payment method.

Singapore is the second in Asia and is sixth in the world, after the US, Canada, UK, Australia and China, to adopt this mobile service.

Hong Kong and Spain are also expected to have this service within the year.

The first step to using Apple Pay is to add your American Express credit card details into your digital wallet by taking a picture of it and keying in the expiration date and CVV number.

The data from the Apple device is transmitted to the contactless reader through the near-field communication (NFC) technology – the same technology used in our ez-link cards.

To make a transaction, you just have to place your device near the contactless reader.

There are at least 30,000 retail stores as well as taxis that are equipped with these contactless readers.

Some of these retail outlets include FairPrice supermarkets, Starbucks and Uniqlo.

This Apple Pay service will only work on Apple devices with the NFC technology and the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, which will also be used to authenticate each transaction.

The devices that support Apple Pay are the iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6, iPad Pro and the iPad Air 2, as well as the Apple Watch.

So far, Apple Pay in Singapore will only be for Amex cardholders. But fret not, Apple has confirmed that VISA cards from DBS cards, UOB cards and Standard Chartered cards will also be jumping on the Apple Pay bandwagon.

Since there is no mention of how long the waiting time could be, it’s a good opportunity to get your hands on an Amex Card so you can be one of the first few people in Singapore to use the Apple Pay feature.

We at GET.com recommend The American Express® True Cashback Card. This credit card gives you a flat rate of 1.5 per cent cashback on all your spending all year round, without any minimum spending limit. Because it’s one of its kind in Singapore, we’ve shortlisted it as one of the top cashback credit cards in Singapore.
