Renowned director Wong Kar Wai is known for his arty, melancholic films like In ‘The Mood for Love’ and ‘The Grandmaster’. But this time, Wong is taking on the role of producer, tackling another genre that he is not usually known for – comedy.
To help him with his new film are three glamorous stars: Hong Kong screen king Tony Leung, heart throb actor Takeshi Kaneshiro and the beautiful Angelababy, who attended a press conference for the film in Beijing on Sunday (Oct 23).
Titled “See You Tomorrow”, the film will be released during the Christmas period in China.
Directed by Chinese writer Zhang Jiajia, “See You Tomorrow” is about a group of professionals who find peace and joy while helping those who are in some form of suffering. According to Global Times, Zhang said it was a “Wong-style” movie using a “Stephen Chow approach”, referring to the antics of madcap Hong Kong comedian actor-director.
The movie has already created some buzz on social media, following the release of its trailer last week.
Besides the cast, netizens were also talking about Wong’s curious partnership with Zhang. While the former is a veteran director, Zhang is a newcomer in film-making, and it remains to be seen if his directing chops are up to par.
Stills unveiled at the press conference also surprised the media and netizens.
Leung, who is usually poker-faced, was dramatically more expressive, while Kaneshiro looked strapping compared to his usually lean self.
Angelababy, who is reportedly four months pregnant, drew attention to her baby bump again.
But when it came to acting on set, Wong compared her to Hong Kong star Andy Lau, whom he praised as “one of the most hardworking actors he’s worked with”. Wong said he was “very satisfied with her performance”.
The movie is expected to be a box-office draw when screening spills over to Chinese New Year period in late January.
