A 79-year-old man died on Thursday (Aug 4) from dengue, said the Health Ministry and National Environment Agency in a joint release.

He lived in Eastwood Drive, which is an active dengue cluster. Eastwood Drive is located near Bedok Road.

“The patient was a 79-year-old Singaporean male who stayed at Eastwood Drive. He was admitted to the hospital on July 30. His condition deteriorated and he passed away on Aug 4,” said MOH and NEA.

He had been admitted to Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital.

He is the seventh person to die from dengue this year.

Six of the seven people who died were aged above 60.

Dengue is more lethal in older persons and more difficult to detect, an expert in infectious diseases told The Straits Times.

Measures to kill adult mosquitoes and eliminate potential breeding grounds have been in place since July 13, said MOH and NEA.

NEA said it has conducted rounds of inspections in residents’ homes as well as common areas in the estate.

It urged residents to co-operate and allow NEA officers to inspect their homes for mosquito breeding sites.
