2016 was the warmest year for Singapore

SINGAPORE — The year 2016 saw the warmest year on record for Singapore, breaking the previous joint record set in 2015, 1998 and 1997. The weather phenomenon is consistent with the ongoing global warming, according to the annual report released by the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) on Thursday (March 23).

The monthly mean temperatures in 2016 were well above the 1981-2010 climate normal, with January (28.3℃), April (29.4℃) and August (28.9℃) being marked as the warmest three months in Singapore respectively.

Globally, 2016 is also the warmest year on record, as recently confirmed by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).

The weather pattern in Singapore last year were significantly influenced by three global climate phenomena, namely El Niño, La Niña and the Indian Ocean Dipole.

The Annual Climate Assessment Report 2016 is in conjunction with the World Meteorological Day, which is annually observed on March 23 worldwide.
