Carlsberg Singapore recently closed its online applications for Carlsberg’s Probably The Best Job campaign that saw more than 13,500 people applying in the span of two weeks.
Last Friday, The New Paper spoke to some of the five finalists who have been shortlisted for the coveted Beer Taster job, where Carlsberg will pay $20,000 in cash on the spot for four hours of work.
Miss Cheryl Ong, 22, one of the finalists, came across the campaign on Facebook.
She said: “When I read the comments and found out this was actually a thing, I thought why not? It is a pretty long shot to get chosen, and I have nothing to lose.”
She also remembered her first beer being Carlsberg, and she loved the lightness of it, calling it “perfect”.
“My mother doesn’t like me drinking. In the family, I am known as the party animal, but I don’t go overboard with drinking,” Miss Ong said.
“I know my limits. My parents definitely trust me a lot more compared to a few years back.”
Graduating from the University of Queensland last year, Miss Ong started to travel around the world, beginning in Switzerland for her sister’s graduation and then heading to Germany and Japan.
The avid traveller said that if she wins the job, the prize money will be handy to fund her hobby.
“If I win this job, I will really love to go to Egypt.”
On the stereotype of women who drink beer, she said: “Some people think it is not becoming of a lady to drink, but I think it is a choice.”
Another candidate, Mr Royston Lim, 32, a marketing manager, started brewing his own beer after his friend had done the same.
Mr Lim said: “I went to my friend’s house three years ago and saw that he was brewing his own beer. I didn’t even know you could do that.
“I did some research, and it started becoming a hobby of mine. It is fun when you can concoct your own taste.
“Beer is the best beverage, as there are many layers and different tastes to it.”
Brewing 30 bottles a batch, he gives them to friends during festive periods and does not plan on selling them.
“When I got the call to tell me that I was shortlisted, I thought it was a prank at first. I was so shocked that my dream could become a reality,” he said.
The other finalists include musician Clifford Gomes, DJ Kenneth Kong and Miss Francine Tang, who is in the home decor business.
The winner will be selected on Dec 15 at FIVE Square.
General manager of Carlsberg Singapore Jimmy Toh said in a statement: “We are ecstatic to learn that so many people have come forth to sign up for what is probably the best job this season.
This campaign has seen many interesting replies, and Carlsberg looks forward to discovering the best candidate in a week’s time.”
