Two beachgoers, Aris and Imam, both 25, were swept away by waves while taking a selfie with two others at the Kedung Tumpang beach in Tulungagung, East Java, Thursday.

National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said on Friday that around 30 search and rescue team members from both the police and military were still looking for the victims who came from Demak and Semarang.

Sutopo said both victims and two of their friends, Joko Budianto, 25, and Imam Wahyudi, 24, were taking a photo on the beach when a big wave rolled in and dragged them out to sea.

“Joko and Imam Wahyudi managed to swim to shore, while Aris and Imam were washed away,” he said in a press release.

The rescue team and locals searched for the victims along the coast of Kedung Tumpang beach immediately, but did not find the victims before nightfall.

Both survivors are being treated at a nearby community health centre.
