SINGAPORE: Two scientists from the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) are the first from Singapore to be awarded the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water (PSIPW), a prestigious international water research prize.

According to NTU’s press release on Thursday (Nov 3), Professor Wang Rong and Professor Anthony Fane received the Alternative Water Resources Prize, one of five awards under PSIPW. The biennial award from Saudi Arabia recognises top innovative scientific research around the world that alleviates the global problem of water scarcity, it added.

Prof Wang and the NTU team developed a thin film composite hollow fibre membrane which can reduce membrane fouling and scaling, thus need less energy in the water reclamation and recycling process, the varsity said. An improved version of the membrane was recently identified by PUB as a research project with commercial potential.

The new membrane technology is also in trials with industry partners for the treatment of processed water in the oil and gas industry as well as for application in the food and beverage industry, NTU said.

Both Prof Wang and Prof Fane have been named by research and advisory firm Lux Research as among the top 25 leading water researchers globally, it added.
