SINGAPOREAN Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s wife issued an apology on Monday over a faux pas on social media involving the image of a small primate holding up its middle finger.

Ho Ching had made the apology, claiming to have accidentally posted the image of the rude-gesturing monkey on Twitter. She also claimed the gaffe was made because she was new to the microblogging site despite having over 1,400 prior posts on Twitter.

“Peace, folks, and embarrassed apologies from this Twitter newbie,” she Tweeted.

Ho had also issued a similar apology on her Facebook account.

According to The New Paper, Ho said she had been playing around with Twitter by exploring its features to see what could or could not be done.

“Discovered Twitter reposts pictures without captions, and unfortunately one of the pictures could be misunderstood on its own. Took down (the photo) as soon as a friend alerted me,” she added.

On April 8, Ho, who is also state-owned Temasek Holdings chief executive, had retweeted the image sourced from People’s Daily, China (@PDChina). Her retweet did not include the original caption which read: “Back off man! Angry monkey flashed middle finger to photographer when interrupted during his morning bath in #Japan.”

The paper also reported that the same photo appeared on her Facebook account without a caption on Sunday, before it was taken down.

(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = “http://connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3”; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, ‘script’, ‘facebook-jssdk’));

Coincidentally, her husband and his sister Dr. Lee Wei Ling had been mired in an open family feud over the one-year anniversary of the death of their father, the city state’s founding leader, Lee Kuan Yew.

He was earlier reported to be “deeply saddened” by his sister’s claim that he “abused” his power to “establish a dynasty”, adding that her allegations that he abused his powers were “completely untrue.”
