SINGAPORE – “My dad, the hero,” Facebook user Fique Fiq posted on his page on Sunday (July 10), after his father helped rescue a child who was locked in a lorry.

His father is Senior Warrant Officer (SWO) Hasanuddin Johar, a firefighter with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).

In his Facebook post, SWO Hasanuddin’s son detailed how he and his parents witnessed a growing commotion at a carpark in Woodlands while they were visiting his sister.

The family soon realised that a child had accidentally locked himself in a lorry.

He wrote: “My dad, being a fire officer, went over to provide assistance. He didn’t jump in straight away.

“Rather, he observed from far to assess the situation before coming up with the best solution to tackle the problem without causing too much physical damage to the lorry.”

The off-duty officer soon climbed to the top of the lorry and used “metal bars and other things he could find” to pry the door open, freeing the child.

The Facebook post has since garnered over 3,000 views and 1,000 shares.

SWO Hasanuddin’s efforts did not go unnoticed by the SCDF too.

The force commended him for a job well done on their own Facebook page.

“As the saying goes, a true firefighter is never off-duty…A classic example of #CommunityFirstResponders in our midst – keeping a watchful eye on the safety of others wherever they may be.”

“We need more #CommunityFirstResponders like Encik Hasan!”

In an earlier incident, another off-duty officer attended to an injured motorcyclist after he was involved in an accident at Empress Road on Saturday (July 2).

The officer took some parts of his sarong and covered the man’s wound when he saw that there was a cut on his head.
