The mother of former Singapore national table tennis player Li Hu was charged with bribery today (Nov 25) for allegedly paying off officials to be lenient with her son.

On Oct 17, Su Fengxian, 54, allegedly offered 2,000 euros (S$3,026) to technical director Loy Soo Han of Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) “as an inducement … to show leniency in her son Li Hu’s disciplinary case with STTA,” according to court documents.

Li, 28, who was Singapore’s No. 2 player for men’s table tennis was sacked recently after he was found to have committed a number of disciplinary breaches repeatedly including insolence, insubordination and violation of house rules. Ranked 58th in the sport, he had his contract terminated on Oct 24.

In a statement, the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau said that Singapore “adopts a zero-tolerance approach towards corruption”.

“The Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau takes a serious view of any corrupt practices and will not hesitate to take action against any party involved in such acts,” it added.

Su faces up to five years’ jail and a fine of up to S$100,000, or both if found guilty.
