Former star of “The Voice” Christina Grimmie was shot dead on Friday (June 10) night after a concert in Orlando, Florida by a suspect who later fatally shot himself, according to various news sources.
Grimmie, 22, along with members of the band Before You Exit had been signing autographs after the gig at Orlando’s Plaza Live venue when a male suspect shot her, said Orlando Police Department spokeswoman Wanda Miglio at a news conference.
Grimmie was reportedly shot in the head, and later died in hospital.
NBC News reported that Grimmie’s brother tackled the shooter, who then shot himself.
The news agency quoted her publicist Heather Weiss, who said in a statement: “It is with a heavy heart that we confirm that Christina has passed and went home to be with the Lord.”
“We ask at this time that you respect the privacy of her family and friends in their time of mourning.”
The shooter, who had two guns on him, died at the scene.
He was not identified and the motive is not yet known.
The incident took place at about 10.45pm ET (2.45pm GMT) during a meet-and-greet with fans.
There were about 60 people in the area at the time but no one else was hurt, reported the Orlando Sentinel.
