SINGAPORE — HSBC cardholders in Singapore can begin using the Apple Pay mobile payment and digital wallet service from Thursday (Dec 1), the bank has announced.

As part of its launch promotion, customers who link their HSBC creditcards to Apple Pay will get S$5 off every transaction they make with the mobile payment service till Jan 15 next year, with a minimum spend of S$10 per transaction.

HSBC is the seventh financial institution in Singapore that has tied up with Apple since the service was launched in April this year. The others are American Express, DBS, POSB, OCBC, Standard Chartered and UOB.

Apple Pay can be used at various retailers, including NTUC FairPrice, Starbucks, Uniqlo, TopShop, Shaw Theatres and Din Tai Fung. Some other recent featured retailers include FoodRepublic, Giant, Cold Storage and SPC.

Singapore was the sixth country in the world to get the service, after it was first launched in the United States in 2014.

To use Apple Pay, users first connect their credit or debit cards to a mobile wallet. Users then pay at stores by holding their iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch close to terminals with near field communication (NFC) technology.
