Skills Development and Vocational Training Minister Chandima Weerakkody recently said that the students at Automobile Engineering Training Institute (AETI) at Orugodawatta in Colombo were dependent on 30-year-old vehicles for practical training.

Minister Weerakkody said that it was important to provide the students with modern vehicles to learn from.

The AETI is a national training institute established in November 1989 with a grant aid from the Government of Japan at a cost of Rs. 500 million. It functions under purview of the National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA).

The total construction cost of the new building was Rs. 1.5 billion and the first stage of the construction had already been completed, the Minister said.

A large number of applications had been received by AETI, but it could train only 300.

The Minister instructed the construction agency to expedite the construction work.

He said training institutions had to be set up countrywide and the first two would be established in Galle and Polonnaruwa.
